Rails engineer — backend emphasis

Summary

Rails engineer with 20+ years of production experience, with six in healthcare SaaS. Backend emphasis: API design, service extraction, third-party integrations, and background job architecture, with meaningful React and frontend range. Recognized by senior peers for spotting unnecessary complexity and making a constructive case for simpler approaches. Comfortable owning a problem domain end to end (writing the architecture doc, designing the API contracts, and shipping the code). Broad cross-industry background spanning healthcare, government, finance, public safety, media distribution, retail, and embedded systems.

Experience

Independent Contractor Senior Software Engineer

– Present

Sole developer across three concurrent clients.

  • Maxxum (IT asset disposal): Sole developer on a legacy Rails app. Built a FreshService API integration that automatically updates clients’ asset-management tools; migrated document storage from local filesystem to S3; architected a new deployment on AWS App Runner with Aurora/MySQL, ECR, and Secrets Manager.
  • tip411 / Citizen Observer (law-enforcement SaaS): Implemented Meta Graph API and X (formerly Twitter) integrations for automatic posting of agency alerts; added an OpenAI integration surfacing platform AI usage on the developer dashboard.
  • Code 4 Group / Aspen Mills (uniform supplier): Hosting migration and deployment operations for a multi-tenant CS-Cart platform.

Novu Health / Icario Senior Software Developer

Engineer on a healthcare SaaS platform serving health-insurance members through wellness incentive programs (flu shots, annual wellness visits, colonoscopies, mom-and-baby visits).

  • Technical stewardship: Led a service-extraction project decoupling print and gift-card vendor integrations from the Rails monolith into a standalone Sinatra service with Sidekiq-backed background jobs; designed the API contracts and background-job reliability layer consumed by other teams.
  • Integration ownership: Built and owned the full member-communication and vendor-integration layer: Twilio (SMS), PlumDev (IVR), gift-card and print vendors, Okta SAML identity management, DataDog, New Relic, Sumo Logic, and PagerDuty.
  • Frontend range: Built React components added to the existing component library; led WCAG accessibility compliance reporting and remediation.
  • Collaboration: Peer-recognized for constructive, high-quality code review; provided informal mentorship and brought clarity to complex design questions without adding process overhead.

Third Wave Partnership, LLC Partner / Software Contractor

Partner in a boutique consulting collective serving clients across healthcare, finance, government, retail, and education. Representative engagements:

  • GovDelivery: Full engineering responsibilities on a SaaS bulk-communications platform serving government agencies including the FAA, with constituent lists in the hundreds of thousands: issue triage, solution design, production deployment, incident response, and security-vulnerability handling.
  • AON/Hewitt: Independently designed and implemented a complex agent-member call-scheduling algorithm across 700+ insurance agents with multi-constraint optimization (postcard lead times, call durations, per-state licensing, no-show tolerance).
  • Wells Fargo: Full project-lifecycle rewrite from requirements to production in 12 weeks, with ETL tooling and Active Directory integration; three-person team.
  • Best Buy: Ruby infrastructure tooling managing bestbuy.com deployment via the AWS API: health monitoring, telemetry collection, automated reporting.
  • Minneapolis Emergency Communications Center: Added functionality to in-house 911 software (C, HP-UX) for a multi-role public-safety application; present and working on emergency-communications infrastructure on 9/11/2001.
  • Medtronic: Added features to cardiac-simulation software used as a test harness for pacemaker development (Windows/MFC).
  • 3M: Enterprise drawing-library modernization and embedded self-checkout library-patron devices (MFC, C/C++).
  • E4Effort: Sole backend developer on a greenfield Rails platform for real-time classroom behavior monitoring and reporting for teachers, parents, and guardians.

Earlier Engineering Roles Firmware, Embedded & Control Systems

  • Digi International: Communication-equipment firmware (serial-port concentrators) in C and i86 assembly; designed and maintained a multi-product build system from a shared source codebase with per-model feature configuration.
  • LaserMaster: Firmware in C and assembly for a large-format solid-ink printer on the Intel i960; owned the flash-memory read/write implementation and the full user-interface stack.
  • Lunar Corp: Medical-device firmware for bone-density measurement (ultrasound and x-ray), including patient-safety-critical motion control; GMP training.
  • Zimpro: Control-systems engineer owning the full controls lifecycle for municipal waste treatment: instrument selection and specification, wiring and circuitry, and Allen-Bradley PLC ladder-logic programming.

Personal Project

kbc Browser-based Kingdom Builder board-game implementation

Rails 8, plain JavaScript, Hotwire/Turbo, PostgreSQL, and ~600 lines of hand-written CSS; no npm build step and minimal dependencies by design. Full base game plus two expansions (Nomads, Crossroads), with thorough unit-test coverage of the placement and scoring logic. Deployed and playable.

Education

University of Wisconsin–Madison B.S., Electrical and Computer Engineering

Coursework: processor design, computer architecture, communication theory, logic, numerical computation, chip design.
